Will a robot mower work on my New Zealand lawn?
A robot mower should fit your lawn as well as your life. Start with the grass, the layout and the setup-not just the biggest number on a box.
Measure the lawn you mow.
Your section size and your mowing area are different things. Exclude the house, driveway, paving and garden beds, then estimate each separate grass area. A sketch with rough measurements is a useful starting point. Leave room in your shortlist for a complicated layout: narrow routes, obstacles and repeated turns all affect how a mower spends its working time.
Look beyond the lawn-size badge.
Walk the steepest parts and the places where a slope meets a path or a bank. A steep patch with a slippery surface asks a different question from a broad, dry incline. Check the exact model's working limits, boundary clearances and installation instructions. Send us a photo of difficult transitions before deciding; a maximum slope figure alone cannot confirm the fit.
Give every lawn area a route.
Mark gates, steps, retaining walls, gravel and the narrowest passages. Check whether the mower can travel safely between areas or whether it would need moving by hand. Keep ponds, drops and other hazards out of its working area using the safeguards and distances specified in its manual. Virtual boundaries do not remove the need for a safe physical layout.
Plan the dock and positioning setup.
Choose a suitable powered dock position and check its approach route. For the L1500, confirm the supplied NetRTK configuration, Home Link Box placement, network coverage and local service availability. For TRON and One Plus, check the exact positioning equipment and connection requirements in the supplied kit. A saved map is not proof that a mower can work without its required positioning connection.
Get a useful answer before you order.
Send your grass area, steepest slope, postcode and photos of the dock position and tight spots. Tell us about separate lawns and when you hope to buy. We'll use those details to discuss the options and flag anything that needs checking. You do not need a perfect site plan to start the conversation.
